The Life of Umm Habiba bint Abu Sufyan (RA) | Wife of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)

Wife of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)

Among the noble wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Umm Habiba Ramla bint Abu Sufyan (RA) stands out for her unwavering faith, strength, and devotion. Her life is a remarkable story of trials, transformation, and triumph — embodying the dignity of a true believer.

🌸 Early Life and Background

Born approximately 17 years before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Umm Habiba’s given name was Ramla, although some historical sources also mention her as Hind. She was the daughter of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, a prominent leader of the Quraysh, and Safiyya bint Al-Aas.

Despite her father’s initial opposition to Islam, Umm Habiba embraced the faith in its early days in Makkah — a courageous act considering the societal pressures and persecution Muslims faced at the time.

🛶 Migration to Abyssinia and Personal Tragedy

She married Ubaidullah ibn Jahsh, a fellow Muslim and brother of the renowned companion Abdullah ibn Jahsh (RA). As persecution of Muslims intensified in Makkah, the couple migrated to Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) seeking refuge under the just Christian king, Negus (Najashi).

In Abyssinia, Ramla gave birth to a daughter named Habiba, from whom she later gained her title “Umm Habiba.”

However, this period of safety was soon marred by personal sorrow. Ubaidullah left Islam and converted to Christianity. His faith weakened, and he reportedly fell into alcoholism, eventually dying in that state. Ramla (RA), now a single mother in a foreign land, remained firm in her Islamic beliefs.

💍 Marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

After the end of her 'iddah (waiting period), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) proposed to her through King Najashi himself — a gesture of honor and compassion. Najashi not only facilitated the marriage but also gave a generous mahr (dowry) on the Prophet’s behalf. Thus, Umm Habiba became one of the Ummahat al-Mu’minin (Mothers of the Believers).

Some historical accounts state that the marriage was solemnized in Abyssinia, while others suggest it took place later in Medina. Either way, her marriage signified spiritual elevation and a new chapter of strength and service.

🕌 A Woman of Principle

One of the most iconic moments from her life occurred when her father, Abu Sufyan, visited Madinah before the conquest of Makkah. Though he was her father, he was still a disbeliever at the time. When he attempted to sit on the Prophet’s bedding, Umm Habiba (RA) politely but firmly removed it, saying, “This is the Messenger of Allah’s bed, and you are not pure.” This reflects her deep commitment to faith over blood ties, in line with Islamic principles.

📚 Contributions and Legacy

Umm Habiba (RA) was known for her noble character, wisdom, and spiritual insight. Several hadiths are narrated from her, including in Sahih Bukhari and Musnad Ahmad. One of the most well-known is her narration of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) words:

“It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person more than three days — except for her husband, [for] four months and ten days.”
(Bukhari)

🕊️ Her Final Days

There are varying reports about the place of her death. According to Ibn Asakir, she traveled to Damascus to visit her brother Mu’awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, who was the ruling caliph at the time. Others state that she died in Medina. Most historians agree that she passed away in 44 AH at the age of 73.

She reportedly had two children from her previous marriage: Abdullah and Habiba, the latter of whom accepted Islam.

🪔 Inspiration for Today

Umm Habiba (RA)’s life teaches us about resilience, faithfulness, and spiritual courage. From facing betrayal in marriage to standing firm in exile and later becoming the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), her journey is one of grace under pressure.

Her legacy continues through her narrations, her example, and the lesson that steadfast belief can transform personal trials into eternal honor.
