Wife of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) |
"Discover the inspiring life of Umm Habiba (RA), one of the revered wives of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and a respected figure in the early days of Islam."
Umm al-Mu'minin Hazrat Umm Habiba bint Abu Sufyan (RA) was married to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and embraced Islam.
Her birth name was Ramla. Her father was Abu Sufyan, and her mother was Safiyya bint Al-Aas. Some historians mention her name as Ramla while others refer to her as Hind. She was born seventeen years before the Prophet's birth and accepted Islam in its early days. Her first husband was Ubaidullah bin Hajjash.
Ubaidullah was the brother of Hazrat Abdullah bin Hajjash. They migrated to Abyssinia, where their daughter Habiba was born, giving Umm Habiba her surname. However, Ubaidullah converted to Christianity and succumbed to alcoholism, which led to his death.
After his demise, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) proposed marriage through Najashi after her waiting period, which she accepted, thus becoming one of the believers.
Another account states that her marriage to the Prophet (PBUH) occurred in Medina, not Abyssinia. She devoted herself to serving him and considered it a blessing. Before Makkah's conquest, when Abu Sufyan visited Madinah, he initially planned to visit her. However, Hazrat Umm Habiba (RA) did not allow her father to sit on the Prophet’s (PBUH) bed because he was a non-believer, adhering strictly to the hadith.
At her death, she spoke with Hazrat Aisha. She maintained a good character until her passing, and many hadiths are attributed to her. She died in 44 Hijri when her brother Mu'awiya bin Abi Sufyan was in power. According to Ibn Asaqir, she went to Damascus to see her brother and died there, with her grave in Damascus. Other historians claim she died in Medina, where her grave also lies. She was 73 at her death, and Hazrat Zainul Abidin once found a book marking the location of her grave.
Umm Habiba had two children with Ubaidullah bin Hajjash: Abdullah and Habiba. Habiba embraced the Prophethood, and Urwa bin Masoud Al-Saqfi connected to Dawood from the Al-Saqq clan.
The hadiths of Bukhari and Musnad Ahmad include her narrations. On Abu Sufyan’s death, she relayed the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hadith: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn a dead person for more than three days, except for her husband, for four months and ten days."
